It is also very comprehensive; I have looked up many words, including a good number of rare and archaic ones, and it has had all but a few. These are particularly useful when they help convey the meaning of words difficult to define, but this dictionary also stands out in having actual pictures of biographical figures - indeed, in listing them. I am a word nut who constantly looks up words for both meaning and etymology and can assure anyone considering this dictionary that it is excellent. The etymologies are also far more extensive than average. Various appendices also give a generous selection of geographical, demographic, monetary, numerical, scientific, literary, historical, and other data. Those looking for an unabridged dictionary will be unsatisfied, but this is about as inclusive as an abridged dictionary gets - and, unlike unabridged editions, it is easily portable. We get a one probably every three or four pages on average, and some pages even have three or so.
The book begins with a Foreword, an explanation of how English dictionaries are made, and guides to the dictionary and pronunciation. It has nearly 1,700 pages of words, and the definitions are clear and concise. There is also a wealth of supplementary materials. Also, unlike many dictionaries, it does not rely on annoying cross references, almost always letting readers get what they need from the relevant entry. Finally, in contrast to many dictionaries, there is a wealth of pictures. These are very useful, even giving a basic grammar and mechanics rundown. Having all this in one place is extremely convenient and useful; this book is practically a mini encyclopedia in addition to a dictionary. All told, anyone looking for an abridged dictionary can do no better.
I would recommend this dictionary to everyone. I've been out of school for many years and this book helps me when I forget spelling and meaning. The CD is great and is in a plastic slot in the back of the book. The price is very low for the quality of this book.
the pages are printed on paper that is thin and easy to tear. so far so good. the diction is fine. the print is smeared in spots. wd.
I love this dictionary because it includes every aspect that I expect when searching for information. It's as if I have the dictionary there on my desk and can look up words without searching through a book, physically, because I can just type in the word I need with just my fingers on the keyboard. I especially love the cd-rom feature which makes searching even easier. I use it when playing a crossword puzzle game that I especially like called Crosswords. Excellent. My Greatgrand daughter also uses the book as an educational tool.
One of the best reference books anyone could have in their book collection. For the price, no child (or adult) should be without one. An outstanding reference.Webster's New World College Dictionary, Fourth Edition (Book with CD-ROM)
